(Melothria scabra) 75 days. The Mexican Sour Gherkin is one of the most whimsical and scrumptious garden treats. This small cucumber-type fruit is shaped like a baby watermelon, which inspired the nickname “mouse melon.” The tiny, crunchy little morsels are reminiscent of a cucumber, but with a slightly firmer texture and a more zippy, citrus flavor. Plants are super ornamental; the foliage is ivy shaped and the slender vines will climb and cling readily, perfect for teepees or growing up a trellis. The dainty leaves and flowers also look right at home in the edible landscape design or the cottage garden. This prolific cucumber cousin is unique and fun for kids. The piquant, cherry tomato-sized fruit is perfect for snacking, tossing into salads or pickling. Fruit tastes best when harvested at less than 1 inch long. Mexican Sour Gherkin takes longer to germinate and get established than cucumbers, so be patient with it! In long summer climates the plants will develop a tuber that is edible and flavored like cucumber; you can also save these tubers for growing next season!
